Abstract
Effects of level (ad lib, 85%, 70%, or 55% ad lib) and duration (28, 56, or 84 days) of dietary restriction on blood levels of selected metabolites and hormones in 14 captive adult female collared peccaries (T. tajacu) were examined. There was a significant drop in body weight with prolonged dietary restriction. Red blood cell count, hematocrit and Hb concentration were higher among ad lib-fed peccaries after 84 days on experiment. The serum urea nitrogen:creatinine ratio was significantly higher in ad lib-fed peccaries and increased serially throughout the experiment. Serum glucose levels were lowest among the 55% ad lib-fed peccaries. Cholestreol levels were higher among peccaries receiving the ad lib diet; nonesterified fatty acid levels were higher among peccaries fed restricted diets. Asparatate amino-transferase was the only serum enzyme to respond to level of dietary intake. Concentration of serum gamma globulin was higher and the albumin:globulin ratio was significantly lower among peccaries fed restricted diets. Serum thyroxine concentration was higher in ad lib-fed peccaries, but triiodothyronine and cortisol did not differ with respect to diet. Hematological and serum biochemical profiles may be useful in assessing peccary condition. This publication has 16 references indexed in Scilit:
