Abstract
Hexestrol, a synthetic estrogen produced by the Wm. S. Merrell Company was selected and studied for a period of 27 mos. Most of the paper deals with the clinical appraisal of the estrogen limited to the treatment of the menopause. Such factors as toxicity, maximum and minimum dosage, choice of prep., length of treatment, and the correlation between the clinical and biological results by means of the vaginal smear are discussed. The preps, used are those of hexestrol, diethyl-stilbestrol diprop. (both in oil) and the most recent prep., an aq. suspension of hexestrol for hypodermic use and the 0.2, 0.5, and 1 mg. tablets of hexestrol for oral use. The report advocates the initial treatment should consist of a course of parenteral injs. until the symptoms are brought under control, followed by weaning with gradual decreasing doses of the oral hexestrol. The largest amt. given a single patient was 45 injs. and 522 mgs. orally for a period of 27 mos. without any untoward effects. Hexestrol was found to be a true estrogen as evidenced by the clinical response and the examination of vaginal smears. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
