Abstract
57 cultures of "nonpathogenic" Neisseria were screened for their vitamin requirements using a vitamin-free casein hydrolyzate basal medium. Biotin and/or niacin were required by 47 cultures; the remaining 10 grew in the absence of added vitamins, but 3 of these were stimulated by addition of biotin. In this respect, i.e., vitamin requirements, the non-pathogenic Neisseria are not as simple as implied by many "textbook" descriptions. Growth of cultures in the casein, hydrolyzate medium was inferior to that supported by a natural medium such as trypticase soy broth. [long dash]Auth. summ. Keywords
