Abstract
Pulmonary function was impaired in dogs following chest irradiation. Diffusing capacity, functional residual volume, compliance and vascular resistance were performed before and at intervals up to 9 months following irradiation. Two schedules were used: single doses of 1000-2900 r; and weekly fractional doses of 200-300 r, totaling 3000-4800 r. Pulmonary diffusing capacity was reduced from the control value of 4.3 to 2.0 ml CO/minute/mm Hg at 6 months after irradiation. Similarly, lung compliance and functional residual volume decreased progressively following irradiation. Pulmonary vascular resistance remained normal for 5 months after irradiation with a suggested increase thereafter. This was correlated with vascular changes. The physiologic changes were discussed in relation to changes in histology. Keywords
