Abstract
The temperature-dependent rates of radiative and nonradiative decay are determined from the two 3P0 and 1D2 excited states of Pr3+ in LaAlO3 from calculated spontaneous emission probabilities and measured lifetimes. The probabilities for electric-dipole transitions are calculated semi-empirically, using the Judd-Ofelt theory with phenomenological parameters. In the case of the 3P0 level, the validity of such a calculation is justified by the agreement with fluorescence intensity measurements. It is found that the temperature behaviour of the nonradiative decay is well explained by a six-phonon process. The discussion of the results of the 1D2 multiplet reveals a purely radiative decay when all possible errors are taken into account. The temperature behaviour of the experimental lifetime is satisfactorily interpreted with a phenomenological approach by admixing of odd vibrational terms in the wavefunctions. Keywords
