Abstract
A new approach of characterizing the breakdown properties of insulation under switching surges is presented. The probabilistic aspects of the actual disruptive voltage and the time to breakdown are combined in one analytical function, the breakdown bivariate probability density distribution. The paper uses this novel concept to offer some useful suggestions to the design of insulation. Keywords
