The Persistence of Toxicity to Codling Moth Larvae of 4,6-Dinitro-o-cresol Applied as a Tree-Trunk Spray

Abstract
Application of 3-5 gal. of the following formula to the trunk and scaffold limbs of large rough-barked apple trees showed considerable persistance of the residue: 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol 4 lbs., stove oil 10 gal., Na lauryl sulfate emulsifier 4 lbs., a penetrant containing I1/2 gal. each of ethylene glycol mono-butyl ether and trichloroethylene, and water to make 100 gal. of spray. Larvae of the codling moth (Carpocapsa porno-nella) cocooned under the rough bark were still being killed by the residue of this spray after 14 months. No injury to the trunks and scaffold branches was observed.
