Abstract
PROLIFERATION of the alveolar epithelium, usually termed (epithelialisation) is a common feature of many mammalian pneumonias (Bell, 1943; Jarrett, 1954; Stamp and Nisbet, 1963). It occurs as a non‐specific reaction of the lung to injury by a wide variety of unrelated toxic and infective agents (Greever, Neubuerger and Davis, 1943; Omar, 1964).Although changes resembling alveolar epithelialisation have been recognized since before the turn of the century (Colberg, 1866, cited by Miller, 1947) the exact origin of the cells involved in this reaction has remained uncertain. Keywords
