DDT Aerosols to Control Onion Thrips and Other Pests in Greenhouses

Abstract
In greenhouse expts. an aerosol containing 5% each of DDT, cyclohexanone, lubricating oil, and acetone dispensed in dichlorodifluoromethane was found to be highly toxic to the thrips Thrips tabaci, T. nigro-pilosus, Hercinothrips femoralis; adults of the greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum; the aphids Myzus persicae, Aphis maidis, and Rhopalosiphum rufomaculata; the cricket Gryllodes sigillatus; the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana; the housefly, Musca domestica; the fungus gnat, Lycoria inconstans; and sowbugs, Armadilli-dium nosatum. The material was tested during the day or night at varying greenhouse temps. on a wide range of plants, without injury to any except cucumber at high dosages and occasionally seedling tomato and soybean. The injury was traceable to cyclohexanone.
