Crystal synthesis under langmuir monolayers

Abstract
Organized organic surfaces can have a pronounced influence on the controlled crystallization of calcium carbonate. The effect is based on an inorganic‐organic molecular recognition process which is important, for example, in biomineralization. The contributions of headgroup charge and ionic concentration are examined. One of the two types of vaterite (the less common polymorph of calcium carbonate) crystals grown are shown in the figure. magnified image
