Abstract
Evidence has been presented that a purified ration, adequate in known nutrients, is conducive to rat caries independently of the presence of coarse particles and the impact of mastication. Demonstration of a caries producing mechanism operating before tooth eruption, the absence of enamel fractures and attrition, and the persistence of weakly supported overhanging enamel walls surrounding undermining caries, all tend to indicate that the described lesions are not caused by mechanical injury of the teeth. No difference can be found between the histopathology of the rat caries here presented and presently established findings in man. Keywords
