Abstract
Maxwell's equations for inhomogeneous media are transformed into loosely coupled first-order differential equations by taking into account the local features of the refractive index profile. A set of generalized WKB type solutions are derived for the electromagnetic fields which are valid for regions of critical coupling. These solutions also merge with the familiar WKB solutions for vertically polarized waves propagating in slowly varying media. Keywords
