THE EXTRACTION OF POLYHYDROXY STEROIDS BY CHLOROFORM

Abstract
When cortisone and desoxycorticosterone were added to water and treated with sodium borohydride, only 0.5 of the steroid could be recovered by hand extraction. The authors disregard the solubility of polyhydroxy compounds in water and the fact that borate complexes with vicinal polyhydroxy compounds and base their suggestion upon the unsubstantiated possibility that steroids may be "very much more soluble in chloroform water than in either water or chloroform".
