Abstract
We develop a free energy functional based upon a straightforward extension of the recently developed generalized van der Waals theory to study the dipolar fluid in the presence of an electric field. Orientational correlations in the presence of the field are introduced via an effective pair potential, which reduces to the well-known RAM (reference state averaged Mayer function) form when the field is zero. Some preliminary applications to the spatially uniform dipolar fluid are presented and an expression for the dielectric constant is obtained As well, saturation effects in large electric fields are investigated. Keywords
