Der Wert der Vitamin B12-Bestimmιmg im Blutserum für die klinische und hämatologische Diagnostik

Abstract
Serum concentration of vitamin B12 in 300 patients with various diseases is reported. Apart from pernicious anemia characteristically low values are found in polycythemia, lymphadenosis, Waldenstrom''s macro-globulinemia, thyroid disease, gastric disturbances with anacidity and intestinal disorders. The vitamin B12 content in the serum of patients after gastrectomy is not consistent. Markedly high values are found with chronic myeloid leukemia. This finding might be useful in the differential diagnosis from osteomyelosclerosis in which vitamin B12 levels are normal or low. Lowered values in other diseases without clinical or hematological evidence of vitamin B12 deficiency indicate the frequency of temporary deficiency conditions. Vitamin B12 deficiency is not necessarily associated with hyperchromia and that a low or normal blood color index does not rule out vitamin B12 deficiency.
