THE ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAM IN SCLERODERMA

Abstract
56 patients with scleroderma were found to have abnormal electroencephalograms in 84% of cases. The abnormalities consisted mostly of "slow" patterns, 32%, and convulsive patterns in 21%. The majority of the records were borderline or mildly abnormal, fewer moderate and few severe. The degree of abnormality was not related to the severity or extent of the sclero-dermatous process or to its duration. There is no general correlation between a unilateral predominance and the EEG abnormality and a unilateral or contralateral sclerodermatous process. It is suggested that a decrease in the ionized Ca in the fluid environment of nervous tissue might be a factor in the EEG abnormality.
