Cardiac Arrhythmia in the Aging Male Rat

Abstract
The present study showed that cardiac arrhythmias associated with disturbances in impulse formation (sinus arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation, ectopic rhythms) and in impulse conduction (A-V [arterioventricular] block, electrical alternans) occur in the rat. The occurrence of these arrhythmias was affected by age and by excerise in a manner generally similar to that observed in man. Thus it appears that the rat may well prove to be a useful experimental animal for the study of naturally occurring cardiac arrhythmias and their modification.
