Abstract
Corticotrophin (25 IU intravenously during 8 hours) decreased the blood eosinophils within 4 hours. The fall in the number of basophils occurred later and was less pronounced. There was no increase in degranulation of the basophils during the treatment. The percentage of basophils in bone marrow did not decrease after 1-3 days'' treatment with corticotrophin. When a daily oral dose of 40 mg prednisone was given the blood eosinophils decreased within 24 hours, whereas the decrease in basophils was not evident until after 3-4 days treatment. After 3-7 days'' treatment the percentage of basophils in the bone marrow was normal or slightly decreased. In 2 patients treated with 100 mg of prednisone for 6 days, the basophils in the marrow had almost disappeared .Keywords
