A model of training needs in health information science

Abstract
In 1980 it was estimated that there were over 1000 clinical information systems and by 1983 this has become a billion-dollar industry. Considering that health care is now costing over $300 billion, and that information processing represents 40% of this cost, the need for developers and implementors trained in health information science is readily apparent. The discipline of medical informatics has developed to be responsive to the service, educational and research needs of computing in the health care field.
