The Mass Spectrometric Determination of Aspirin Via Extractive Alkylation

Abstract
Extractive alkylation conditions are described which result in the efficient benzylation of ASA and SA. Benzylation is rapid with formation of the ester of ASA which is stable to hydrolysis resulting in a yield of 95%. This reaction was used in the development of a mass spectrometric determination of ASA in plasma using the perdeuterio benzyl ester of ASA as the calibration standard.
