Bacterial Flora of the Mouse Uterus.

Abstract
Washings obtained from uteri of immature and mature mice of various strains were studied on broth and blood agar cultures and were found to contain microorganisms in 14% of adult Swiss mice, 17.3% of immature Swiss mice, 12.6% of adult BALB/c mice, 27% of C57BR/cd mice and 35.2% of C57BL/6 mice. Higher percentage of bacteria were found in endo-metrial secretions which accumulate after cervical ligation. The most frequent microorganism was Corynebacterium hoffmannii (68%) with Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus fecalis, Escherichia coli, in descending order of frequency. Bacteria were demonstrated in gram-stained histologic sections within endometrial cells and endometrial secretions. During accumulation of endometrial secretions the number of gram-negative bacteria increased and that of gram-positive organisms decreased.
