Abstract
Washings obtained from uteri of immature and mature mice of various strains were studied on broth and blood agar cultures and were found to contain microorganisms in 14% of adult Swiss mice, 17.3% of immature Swiss mice, 12.6% of adult BALB/c mice, 27% of C57BR/cd mice and 35.2% of C57BL/6 mice. Higher percentage of bacteria were found in endo-metrial secretions which accumulate after cervical ligation. The most frequent microorganism was Corynebacterium hoffmannii (68%) with Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus fecalis, Escherichia coli, in descending order of frequency. Bacteria were demonstrated in gram-stained histologic sections within endometrial cells and endometrial secretions. During accumulation of endometrial secretions the number of gram-negative bacteria increased and that of gram-positive organisms decreased. Keywords
