Abstract
If the angular and radial quantum numbers of states with the same binding energy satisfy a linear relation, as is the situation in the Coulomb potential, the spectrum is said to be linearly degenerate. We present a detailed study of the consequences of such linear degeneracy in atomic potentials. One of the results is a new, and more general, derivation of Scott’s correction to the Thomas-Fermi energy. Keywords
