Abstract
Artificial intergeneric hybrids between the New Zealand endemic Pachycladon novae‐zelandiae and two species of Ischnocarpus are described. The hybrids are Pachycladon novae‐zelandiae (?) × Ischnocarpus novae‐zelandiae (?), and P. novaezelandiae (?) × I. exilis (?). The two sets of hybrids produce viable pollen, and F2 families of each have been raised. Pachycladon and Ischnocarpus share several morphological characters, and these, along with the ability to form intergeneric hybrids, suggest that the two genera are closely related. The two genera also differ in a number of characters, and it is concluded that it is premature to make any taxonomic changes without considering relationships with other New Zealand and Australian genera.
