Abstract
Several important advantages of the use of fern gametophytes in biological studies are discussed. These unique characteristics of ferns, among others, have led to studies in the developmental control of sexual reproduction, spore germination and its bearing on seed germination and the interaction of light, phytochrome, and gibberellins, genome sizes and their evolutionary patterns, and the regulatory machinery controlling eukaryotic development. Other areas of investigation which should be of particular interest to biologists generally relate to nucleic acid studies.
