Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify a typology of leisure activities based on interest data, and to determine the degree of relationship between 20 of Murray's personality needs and the identified leisure typology. The subjects for this study were 212 undergraduate students. The investigator developed a leisure interest inventory consisting of 51 activities. The Personality Research Form-E (Jackson 1974), based on Murray's needs theory of personality, was used to identify the subjects' need profiles. Principal factor analysis was used to identify the factor structure of leisure interests. To investigate the relationship between leisure interests and personality needs, factor scores were constructed for each subject based upon the above factor analytic solution. Canonical analysis followed by a structure matrix analysis was then conducted. The factor analysis identified nine factors, accounting for 87 percent of the common variance. The canonical correlation analysis revealed that there were four independent relationships between Murray's needs and the identified leisure interest factors. The structure matrix analysis revealed that only 12 of the 20 personality needs and seven of the nine leisure factors displayed a significant relationship. Keywords
