Abstract
Malignant melanoma affecting the mucosal surfaces of the head and neck is a rare condition. In a retrospective review of 36 patients, 33 cases involved the nasal cavity and 3 affected the sinuses, 1 from the maxilla and 2 from the ethmoids. Diagnosis was made by staining techniques and confirmed by EM. Five patients had involved cervical nodes and 2 had secondary deposits in the lungs. Radical local surgery and radiotherapy provided the best prognosis, with repeated excision of any local recurrence of lymph node deposits.
