Abstract
Among the water-soluble carbohydrates in the stem of A vera cruz the following have been detected by chromatographic methods: fructose, glucose, sucrose, 4 other substances, possibly oligosaccharides and 2 polyfructosans. The optical activity and the content of total soluble solids obtained from various plants vary a great deal. While generally the juice is laevorotatory, instances of dextrorotatory juices have been noticed. In some plants, there is a gradient in the distr. of carbohydrates along the length of the stem, as also radially in a cross-section. Preliminary details regarding the isolation and characteristics of 2 polyfructosans are described. Keywords
