Abstract
Data are presented to show that Pltressin causes a depressor response in the hypertensive rat. Two phases are distinguished. A cumulative depressor effect occurs with repeated daily injections of Pltressin. This was shown earlier to apply to DCA and compound F hypertensive rats. The present report shows that it occurs also in rats made hypertensive either by renal compression or by partial nephrectomy. A delayed depressor response is also noted when the effect of Pitressin is studied for 7-9 hours following injection. It is seen after only one injection of 4 IU in DCA hypertensive rats as well as after a series of injections of 2 IU. It is independent of the antecedent pressor response. This delayed depressor response does not occur at either dose level in rats made hypertensive by renal compression and only at the higher dose level in rats made hypertensive by subtotal nephrectomy. The latter finding is probably complicated by the fact that the subtotally nephrectomlzed rat has only marginal renal function and consequently is not a good test animal for these studies. Keywords
