Abstract
The depolarisation ratio for Raman scattering from molten alkali halides varies from a high value of Cs+ salts to a low value for Na+ salts. This is explained as being due to electronic distortion caused by ionic overlap. The ratio of ionic radii (or polarisabilities) is found to be the most important parameter. Two-body anion-cation interactions dominate except in the case of Li+ salts where anion-anion overlap becomes significant. In the molten alkaline-earth halides anion-anion overlap is always significant and many-body effects cause deviations from the alkali halide trends. Keywords
