Arthritic Manifestations in Regional Enteritis

Abstract
Thirty-seven males and 54 females with regional enteritis were questioned and examined with regard to the incidence of rheumatic complaints. At the time of the survey, polyarthritis was present in 6 patients (4 female and 2 male); a history of arthritis was obtained in 5 males and 7 females, and in 2 of the females this was associated with erythema nodosum. Ankylosing spondylitis was diagnosed clinically and confirmed radiologically in 4 males and 1 female, and it was thought that a 5th male might well be suffering from this disorder. Three of these 6 patients had an associated peripheral arthritis. Radiologically, sacro-iliitis was present in a total of 18 patients, which included the 6 diagnosed as possible or definite cases of ankylosing spondylitis, 2 with psoriasis, and 1 who had had Reiter''s syndrome. Even when the last 3 were excluded, there was a significantly greater incidence of sacro-iliitis, particularly in the males, as compared with the controls.
