Correlation between Fluctuation of Free Anxiety and Quantity of Hippuric Acid Excretion

Abstract
Three groups of subjects were studied. Group 1 consisted of 14 patients suffering from considerable amts. of "free anxiety." Group 2 consisted of 10 catatonic schizophrenic patients. Group 3 was composed of 15 physically and mentally healthy hospital employees. The 1st group was found to excrete elevated amts. of hippuric acid which were reduced to normal levels by psychiatric treatment allaying the anxiety. The 2d group secreted significantly less hippuric acid than did normal controls. Successful psychiatric treatment of these patients raised the hippuric acid excretion to normal levels. Healthy individuals exposed to stress did not develop abnormal excretion patterns.
