Abstract
A comparison of Oral Hygiene Index scores and Periodontal Index scores in more than 5000 individuals examined in Ecuador and Montana suggests that a clean oral environment is essential to the prevention and control of periodontal disease. Generally, persons with good oral hygiene status, regardless of age, have low Periodontal Index scores. Persons with very poor oral hygiene status, regardless of age, have high Periodontal Index scores. Keywords
