THE TOXICITY OF VIOMYCIN IN HUMANS

Abstract
Ten patients receiving 30 to 75 mg./kg. of viomycin intramusc. for 2 to 16 wks. showed toxicity in the form of renal irritation in all, decrease in serum electrolytes (K, Ca, phosphates and chlorides) in 5, elevation of blood urea N in 4, impairment of vestibular function and partial deafness in 2 and a minor hypersensitivity reaction in 3. Drug-resistance was noted after 60 to 70 days of treatment.
