Flowering Behaviour of Senecio jacobaea: Effects of Nutrient Availability and Size-Dependent Vernalization

Abstract
Plant size just before or just after winter is the primary determinant of flowering in Senecio jacobaea L. Small plants are less likely to flower in the next summer. However, in addition to size-dependent vernalization, nutrient availability after the cold period enhances the probability of flowering in plants. Thus, both a size-requirement for vernalization as well as a size-requirement for photoinduction are found in S. jacobaea.
