Abstract
The rapid roll-out and subsequent scale-up of HIV and antiretroviral services in resource-limited countries has seen a >7-fold increase in the number of patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART) over the 4 years prior to 2007.1 ART in low- and middle-income countries has been shown to be similarly effective in terms of individual immunological and virological response as in high-resource settings.2,3 However, challenges remain relating to barriers to access,4 retention on treatment,5 early mortality2,6,7 and limited and less well-tolerated second-line regimens.8Keywords
