Abstract
Twenty hysterical or conversion dysphonias were classified into a 4 point scale: (1. No voice, 2. Whisper, 3. Intermittent, 4. Continuing). The terms "hysterical" and "conversion** were used more often in reference to mute and whispering patients. In 2 cases there was a finding of spastic dysphonia. Patients from all groups have previous episodes of different voice symptoms. None of the patients had histories of emotional or physical trauma. All had cold or influenza preceding onset of their voice disorder and all had feelings of tightness in their throat. Keywords
