Abstract
It is shown that the crystalline electric field at a rare-earth ion in the double nitrates approximates to one possessing icosahedral symmetry. The effect of this on the energy level system of a rare-earth ion is investigated with the aid of group theory, and an application is made to the paramagnetic resonance in dysprosium double nitrate. Keywords
