Abstract
Summary The latex-fixation titer was determined in whole serum and in the euglobulin fraction of serum from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and from control subjects. In the patients with rheumatoid arthritis and joint symptoms for about one year or less the latex-fixation titer was more often found to be positive in the euglobulin fraction than in whole serum. Still the lowest positive and all negative titers in the euglobulin fraction appeared in this group of patients (not treated with steroids). The results suggest that previous prolonged treatment with Prednisone or Prednisolone should be taken into account in an evaluation of the latex-fixation titer (and the hemagglutination titer). The preliminary results of an inhibition test adapted for the latex gamma globulin system are reported. The inhibition test described by Ziff et al. (1956), adapted for the sensitized sheep cell system, could not without modifications be applied to the latex gamma globulin system. Prozone phenomena were often seen in dilutions of whole serum and hardly ever in those of the euglobulin fraction. Inhibiting activity was demonstrated in the supernatants of the euglobulin precipitates. Keywords
