Abstract
The achievement of optical bistability in semiconductor devices, which operate at low c.w. power levels, has stimulated interest in the possibility of all-optical computing systems. The necessary photonic logic gates for a rudimentary system, which have now been achieved in InSb are presented. Modified computer architecture which exploits the innate parallelism, large bandwidth, non-interfering propagation and fibre-optic compatibility of the all-optical system is discussed. The relative merits of electronic and all-optical systems are considered. Keywords
