Study of vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency in hookworm disease

Abstract
Serum vitamin B12 and folic acid status have been examined in patients with hookworm infestation by morphologic study and estimation of serum levels. The parasitic factor etiologically was not related to their deficiencies. Vitamin B12 deficiency was mainly nutritional in origin; its malabsorption played an insignificant role. The cause of folic acid deficiency is not clear; it could be due to malnutrition and malabsorption or both. The deficiencies of both these vitamins were considered additional factors in the pathogenesis of anemia.
