Abstract
The homokaryotic progeny of 1 isolate of T. cucumeris, anastomosis group 4, was 100% self-sterile and 96% of the homokaryotic progency of 6 other isolates also were self sterile. Most self-fertile homokaryons discharged < 100 basidiospores per 48 h; heterokaryons averaged 0.5 .times. 106 spores per 48 h regardless of whether they were field isolates or formed by pairing self-sterile, self-fertile or self-sterile with self-fertile homokaryons. T. cucumeris is heterothallic and bipolar with multiple alleles. Heterokaryon incompatibility factors (H-factors) in T. cucumeris are equated with sexual incompatibility factors. The ability of a homokaryon to fruit is not dependent on heterozygous H-factors. The low percentage of progeny exhibiting homokaryotic fruiting was previously misinterpreted as evidence for primary homothallism. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
