Abstract
Translational-energy spectra of 9 keV OCS3+ and CS23+ scattered off He and energy change spectra of product ions following 9 keV electron capture collisions of OCS3+ with Ne and CS23+ with Ar are presented. Both sets of spectra show that a few microseconds after their formation by electron impact, only OCS3+ (X 2 Pi ) and CS23+ (X2 Pi g) ground states are observed in collisions with atomic target gases. However, there is clear evidence that an excited state lying at about 1.5 eV above the CS23+(X 2 Pi g) ground state is populated in collisions with He within the target cell. The triple ionisation energies of OCS (X 1 Sigma +) and CS2(X 1 Sigma g+) are measured to be 60.0+or-1.0 and 49.0+or-1 eV respectively. Keywords
