Abstract
Strains of Gymnoascus demonbreunii Ajello & Cheng (1967c) including ATCC 18027, -18028, -18029, CBS 121.67, -122.67, -123.67, SAF-7 and M 19 were studied. All 3cultures from CBS and 2 of those from ATCC were found to produce cleistothecia of G. demonbreunii with an arthroaleuriospore asexual state. Strain ATCC 18029, reported to be a single ascospore culture of G. demonbreunii derived from Strain ATCC 18028, was found to be a pure culture which produced a Pseudoarachniotus perfect stage. Strain SAF-7 was a mixture of two species; namely, G. demonbreunii and H. capsulatum. Pure cultures of G. demonbreunii failed to convert to the yeast form, in vitro or in vivo, and failed to grow at 37°C. The fungus, however, was found to persist in a mycelial form in mouse tissues. Careful study of the asexual stage of C. demonbreunii revealed that this fungus has no taxonomic relationship to H. capsulatum. Keywords
