V Acetylcholinesterase Activity in the Efferent Nerve Fibers of the Human Inner Ear

Abstract
The distribution of the efferent nerve fibers in the human inner ear was studied by the histochemical demonstration of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. The specificity of enzyme activity was proven by the inhibitory effect of various chemicals. AChE containing fibers were found scattered throughout the trunk of the cochlear and vestibular nerves. These fibers apparently are not part of the olivocochlear bundle. Several other original observations were made contributing new data to the already known distribution pattern of the efferent nerve fibers in man.
