Abstract
Li is reported to raise serum Ca and lower serum phosphate concentrations and to increase urinary Ca excretion. Because these changes may be effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH), PTH was measured in 19 psychiatric patients receiving Li. PTH was significantly higher in these patients than in 150 normal subjects. For all patients serum Ca concentrations correlated significantly with serum Li concentrations. Li may cause biochemical hyperparathyroidism. Secondary hyperparathyroidism in certain patients with Li nephrotoxicity is also possible. This publication has 11 references indexed in Scilit:
