Abstract
It is shown that Coulomb interactions among quasiparticles can play a determining role in the interband optical transitions of polyvalent metals. Explicit calculations for Mg metal made by configuration-interaction methods greatly improve upon the results of single-particle self-consistent-field calculations. Keywords
