Abstract
There is general agreement regarding the clinical and pathological features of chronic active hepatitis (1)—lupoid hepatitis (2), plasma cell hepatitis (3), active juvenile cirrhosis (4)—but the efficacy of any type of therapy has yet to be established. Suppression of symptomatic and biochemical manifestations is often achieved during glucocorticoid administration (3-7), but proof that these drugs affect the ultimate prognosis favorably is lacking. A few recent reports (5, 8-10) suggest that some patients may benefit from the administration of purine antagonists (6-mercaptopurine, azathioprine, 6-thioguanine). In no reported case of well-established chronic active hepatitis thus treated, however, has the remission been sustainedKeywords
