Abstract
The recent use of isotopically labelled substrates has now established many metabolic reactions of acetic acid. The principle divisions into which the review is divided are: (1) The acetylation reaction (acetylation of amines, precursors of acetyl groups, metabolism of acetylamino acids). (2) The formation of acetic acid (occurrence in animal tissues, formation from fatty acids, metabolism of odd numbered fatty acids, formation of acetyl from amino acids, mechanisms of fatty acid oxidation, formation of acetyl from pyruvate, glycogen, fatty acid, cholesterol, protoporphyrin, uric acid, the biologically active form of acetic acid). (3) The oxidative metabolism of acetic acid. Keywords
