Abstract
Employment security has many dimensions. This paper discusses those dimensions and focuses on one in particular: the relative security provided by different types of employment contract. It then uses data from a survey of employers to compare the security enjoyed by the labour force in Australia and New Zealand. The paper finds that New Zealand provides employment that is more secure. It is also found that in both countries, employment has been becoming less secure and that there is a substantial gender gap. It is also found that large workplaces are less likely to offer secure employment than small workplaces. Keywords
