Abstract
Particulate preparation from barley roots provided active systems for fixation of CO2 through carboxylation of phosphoenolpyruvate and to a lesser extent of pyruvate. A study of the conditions and cofactor requirements was made for fixation by the 2 systems. Pepcarboxylase activity linked to malic dehydrogenase activity in the presence of reduced diphosphopyridine nucleotide stimulated formation of labelled malate. Evidence obtained from radioautographs indicated the presence of pepcarboxykinase activity and the possible functioning of the glyoxylase by-pass. Physiological significance of these reactions is discussed briefly. Keywords
